Uber Loses London Licence
Transport for London has refused to grant Uber a new licence, calling the ride-hailing Company not a “fit and proper” operator.
The Uber App is used by around 3.5 million Londoners each week, offering users the choice of vehicle they wish to ride in from a Mondeo to a Mercedes and undercutting the costs of local taxis or London’s iconic black cabs.
Uber had made an application for a new licence to continue operating in London, as its current licence is due to expire on 30 September 2017. Whilst it does have 21 days to appeal the refusal to renew its licence, as it currently stands TFL has said “Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility”.
There are concerns that Uber’s failings could have an impact on public safety and security, however the operator intends to immediately challenge the decision in the courts, stating that “Transport for London and the mayor have caved in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice.”
It seems this decision has shocked London users, many of which will have forgotten how to get around town without using the Uber App. On the other hand, opponents of the operator such as the General secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, Steve McNamara, have gone onto say that “This immoral company has no place on London’s streets.”
