Experiencing the 2025 STEAM Challenge

I had the privilege of attending an inspiring event, the STEAM Challenge, aimed at young women aged 14-15, where they had the opportunity to innovate and invent solutions to some of the world’s most pressing economic challenges, particularly in poorer countries.

The event was a powerful reminder of the immense talent and potential within the younger generation of women, and how creativity and determination can pave the way for solving real-world problems.

The main task of the challenge was for participants to prepare a project that addressed a current economic issue in developing countries. The range of ideas showcased the incredible creativity and social awareness of these young women. Some of the standout projects included:

  • Sanitary Products: Solutions that promote menstrual health and hygiene.
  • Water Filtration Systems: Devices designed to provide access to clean drinking water.
  • Disease Prevention: A product aimed at combating diseases that thrive on rocks in certain environments.
  • Ocean Waste Collection: A device designed to help collect and manage ocean pollution.

Each of these projects was not only innovative but also showed the potential for real, positive change in some of the most underserved parts of the world. The fact that all the projects won a prize reflects the quality of ideas these young women brought to the table.

The event wasn’t just about the projects—it also served as a platform for inspiration. The attendees heard from three incredible guest speakers, including our Partner & Solicitor, Nicola Hall, who shared her personal journey into the legal profession. She discussed the challenges she faced as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field and how she overcame them to build a successful career. Her story resonated deeply with the audience, proving that persistence and passion can break down barriers.

In addition to Nicola, two other guest speakers who work within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields also shared their experiences. They discussed the unique difficulties women face when entering these industries but also highlighted the success they’ve achieved in defying the odds. Their stories were not only motivational but served as a powerful reminder that women have the capability to succeed in fields where they are often underrepresented.

The STEAM Challenge was a fantastic celebration of the talent and innovation of young women, and it was clear from the projects and guest speakers that these young women are not only capable but ready to face the challenges of the future. The event was inspiring for me, and I’m certain it left the attendees feeling more motivated, confident, and ready to take on the world.

Supporting the STEAM Challenge is just one of the ways we help our local community.
